A Disease Caused by Asbestos Exposure – Asbestosis

Cigarette smoking is the primary risk factor for lung cancer. The cancer research shows that the risk of getting cancer of the lung is higher among the cigarette smokers than the nonsmokers. Compared to nonsmokers, smokers have a 20-fold risk of developing lung cancer. There are many bad effects of cigarette smoking which may result in chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer of lung. If you are a cigarette smoker, I advise you to give some efforts to stop it now.

As we all know, the tobacco smoke is one of the carcinogens that causes the cancer, especially the lung cancer. The properties of tobacco smoke destruct lung tissue by inflammation and consequently causing the cancer of lung. Cigarette smokers have lower levels of lung function than nonsmoker, and quitting smoking greatly reduces cumulative risk for developing lung cancer.

However, it’s also the ability to flake into tiny fibers that makes asbestos so dangerous. Asbestos products that can release the carcinogen into the air are determined to be “friable.” On the other hand, products which have asbestos sealed tightly so that it is unable to be released into the air are called “non-friable.” While the use of this material is primarily banned, some non-friable containers of asbestos are still allowed.

Family members of those working in factories where asbestos is used can increase their risk of developing mesothelioma. This is because asbestos particles will cling to the clothes and hair of an individual. If that person does not wash up or change clothes, they bring it home to their family. Other family members may be exposed when doing laundry, for example.

Besides, the components of tobacco smoke also induce oxidative DNA damage. This oxidative DNA damage is related to an increased risk of developing several degenerative chronic diseases which includes coronary heart disease and the dysfunctional cells (cancer).

Thus, if you suspect that you have asbestos in your home, you should not disturb the material so that you do not accidentally release the fibers into the air. You must get a professional asbestos removal service to take the material out, and you should not remodel your home if you believe that asbestos may be present. For some people who are especially sensitive to this material, a single exposure can result in an asbestos-related disease.
