Christian Funeral Service – Significance And Ceremony

Christian funeral service for any devout Christian means a celebration of the eternal journey of the soul to the life after death. It is because of this exact reason that such services are very uplifting, as they strongly assert the belief that the deceased has found a permanent abode in the House of God.

According to the Christians, death is an entry into the world of eternal bliss and permanent exit from this cycle of grief and agony. That the soul is enjoying heavenly bliss and is with the Lord Himself is a comforting thought that lessens the extremity of the shock that death brings to the family members. The Christian funeral service is performed by devout Christians keeping these beliefs in thought.

Usually, a Christian funeral ceremony is conducted by the pastor. They are normally conducted at the church which the deceased used to visit when he or she was alive. Generally there is no casket in the service, but there are exceptions to this, particularly when the service is conducted inside a funeral home. Viewing of the deceased’s body is not something that you will find in a typical Christian funeral ceremony.

The funeral service is almost like a memorial, in which the programmes begin with singing of hymns, a vocalist, and religious readings from the Holy Scriptures. A short message is delivered by the pastor, after which a mass prayer is held.

Next the family members and close friends share their grief with the group, and the people express their sentiments and respect for the deceased and share their thoughts on how the deceased touched their lives and left an everlasting memory. These days, people also do a slide show containing snapshots from the life of the deceased or play a video recording taken from his or her lifetime.

The ceremony finally ends with a short fellowship reception at the church, where refreshments are served. A service at grave is generally not included, though some Christian communities opt for that as well.
