The Rites In Christian Funerals

A funeral can either be a State or a family ceremony, and it is held in the memory of the deceased person. It involves many customs and rites that are unique to the religion of the deceased.

Usually at the Christian funerals, the rituals can be categorized under three broad heads – visitation, funeral and the burial. The funeral and visitation ceremonies have a lot more importance as far as ritualistic aspects are concerned and they are discussed here.

The first ceremony is the visitation, when the body is placed in a coffin for general viewing by friends and relatives. The body is mostly adorned with the finest garments and jewels belonging to the deceased. Some cultures require embalming the body for the visitation, while others don’t.

Visitation often includes a display of pictures of the deceased by the family members or a display of items that were valued by the deceased during his lifetime. Some people also play a video recording or do a slideshow in memory of the dead.

The visitation is followed by the next service, which is the memorial service, also known as funeral, and it is conducted in a church. The casket with the dead body in it is carried in a vehicle to the church, accompanied by a funeral procession of mourners. The casket is laid inside the church with an elegant floral decoration on it.

Funeral services usually include prayers and recitals from the Holy Scriptures and the Bible. The people attending the funeral also sing religious songs. Then the presiding pastor gives a speech, which is then followed by tributes given by the family members and friends of the departed elaborating upon the life, accomplishments and good nature of the dead person. Quite often, the people assembled are permitted to see the dead body for one last time before it is taken for burial. Church bells may be rung both before the service and after it.

The completion of second part, which is the funeral, marks the commencement of the burial, which is the final stage of the proceedings, and the deceased’s body is carried through a funeral procession.
