Treating Chronic Coughs Is Necessary

If you are suffering from common cold or flu, and bouts of cough are causing you pain and soreness of throat or resulting in other health complications, you must seek medical help without delay.

Coughs are a defence mechanism adopted by the body to get rid of irritation in the air passage restricting the free passage of air to the lungs. They not only happen due to physical problems and ailments but also can be triggered because of psychological complications. Cough due to bodily ailments happens normally when external agents and environmental pollutants like dust, pollen, smoke etc invade the body or if you are down with some serious disease. The latter is a habit of coughing or sneezing in an individual without any concrete physical reason, and it is known as ‘habitual coughing’ or Streruphilia in medical parlance.

Cough can often be chronic or even acute, and can have a typical characteristic which depends on the intensity and duration of coughing seizures. Acute coughing which last less than 3 weeks can be an offshoot of either infectious or non-infectious diseases. Examples of physical ailments of one time nature that result in painful coughs are pneumonia and sinusitis and examples of complications triggering chronic coughs are asthma and bronchitis.

Consulting a good physician is essential to get to the root cause of the complication and taking appropriate treatment for complete recovery. Doctors prescribe several kinds of medicines to control the symptoms of cough and pain like antihistamines, antibiotics and other suppressants. However, chronic coughing might require the sufferer to undergo prolonged therapies, that can go on for months at a stretch until the problem is cured.

As with any other medical condition, prevention of cough is much more sensible than having to deal with it later when you become badly affected by it. Positive lifestyle changes can keep you away from cough problems and for that you should give up smoking and take a good, balanced diet.
